Padrão dos Descobrimentos

In the Belém district on the banks of the Tagus River you will find the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, another Lisbon attraction and monument to the maritime discoveries. It is dedicated to Henry the Navigator and was built on the 500th anniversary of his death in 1960. Translated it means “Monument to the Discoveries”.

The monumental sculpture itself is 56 meters high and stands right on the banks of the Tagus River. The monument aims to commemorate the Age of Discoveries and the golden age of Portuguese history. It represents 33 important and significant personalities of the late Middle Ages in Portugal. The stone Caravelle was already built for the Portuguese World Exhibition in 1940 by the architect Cottinelli Telmo and the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida. However, it was not until 1960 that it was given its place on the Tejo.

The memorial also includes an auditorium for 101 people with a stage inside. The second floor also has an exhibition hall and a stairway to a viewpoint.

The mosaic compass rose on the floor in front of the entrance is a gift from the Republic of South Africa. It has a diameter of 50 meters and shows the routes of the Portuguese explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries.

From the viewing platform you have a fantastic view of Torre de Belém, the neighboring Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Ponte de 25 Abril. It is worth it ..

Opening Hours

A visit to the monument is possible at any time. The exhibitions inside are bound to opening times. You can visit the interior every day from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
