An important sight of the city of Rome is the National Monument to Victor Emmanuel (Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II) between Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum.

Viktor-Emanuelsdenkmal (Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II)

The Monumento Vittorio Emanuele II, often also called Vittoriano, located in the central and busy square of Rome, the Piazza Venezia, was built by Giuseppe Sacconi from 1885. However, it was only completed in 1927. The national monument is located on the Capitoline Hill and offers a fantastic view over the city from the Terrace (Terrace of the Quadrighe). It is close to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.

The monument is dedicated to the first king of the newly founded Kingdom of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II. Today it is one of the sights of the city and an important state symbol of the Italian Republic. The very massive building stands out in the square with the large marble staircases, the columns and the 12 meter high sculpture of the king. The equestrian statue of the king is the work of the sculptor Enrico Chiaradia. Two soldiers guard the tomb with an eternal fire (at the top of the free-running marble staircase).

The monument has a height of about 80 m and a width of about 130 m. It also houses the Museo del Risorgimento, which commemorates the Italian state founding movement and Italian wars of independence in the 19th century and the flag monument.

The building is also called “Typewriter” (macchina da scrivere) by the locals because of its strange and huge shape.

The Cortile del Belvedere is one of the most important architectural works of the High Renaissance and one of the sights in Rome. The Belvedere Courtyard in the Vatican Palace in Rome was designed by Donato Bramante and offers a wonderful view of the old St. Peter’s Basilica. It can be visited together with the Vatican Museums.

Cortile del Belvedere – View of the old St. Peter’s Basilica

The design of the Cortile del Belvedere comes from Donato Bramante. The implementation was a complex architectural project. It began with the construction of the Villa Belvedere on the hill with a view of the old St. Peter’s Basilica around 1484. The concept for the design of the inner courtyard was carried out from 1505 by Donato Bramante.

The long courtyard of the Belvedere was designed as a single closed space. He connected the Vatican Palace to the Villa Belvedere in a series of terraces connected by stairs. There were also narrow wings on its sides.

At the end of the 16th century, the courtyard was changed by a building and divided into two separate courtyards. Donato Bramante did not see the completion himself. Today, the spacious terraces and wide, elegantly curved outside staircases as well as the monumental baroque architecture are fascinating for all visitors.

In addition to the Belvedere courtyard, the Vatican courtyards include two other courtyards: the “Cortile della Pigna”, which owes its name to a four-meter-high bronze pine cone, and the library courtyard “Cortile della Biblioteca”.

One of the most famous sights in Rome is the Pantheon. This ancient building in Rome, which has been consecrated as a church, is particularly known for the vaulted rotunda of 43.30 m. For a long time, the dome was – measured by its inner diameter – the largest dome in the world. It is one of the best preserved structures from Roman antiquity. The sight is one of the most important tourist destinations in Rome.

Pantheon – temple

The Pantheon was built on the Field of Mars (Campo Marzio) as early as 125 AD. Originally it was probably built as a temple for all gods. This is due to the name, which is composed of the Greek pan (= “all”) and théos (= “gods”). Only later – probably around the year 609 – was the temple converted into a Christian church. The consecration took place as Sancta Maria ad Martyres.

Dome of the Pantheon

The dome of the Pantheon is an architectural masterpiece and was a model for many later buildings. Among other things, it was the template for the dome in St. Peter’s Basilica. The sky is supposed to symbolize and the opening above the sun or the connection to the stars. The dome has a diameter of approx. 43 meters. Since the interior is as high as it is wide, the dome, conceived as a complete sphere, would touch the ground. It is also one of the oldest large concrete structures in the world. The large hemispherical dome was cast in one piece with the help of gigantic wooden cladding. The Romans used a cement-like mortar and small-hewn bricks and stones for the foundry.

The round opening in the top of the dome has a diameter of 9 m and serves as a light source.

The Pantheon should be visited just to look into the dome.

St. Peter’s Square in Rome, built between 1656 and 1667, is one of the most important sights of the city with the associated St. Peter’s Basilica. It is part of the Vatican City. The state border between Vatican City and Italy is formed by the colonnades, which consist of 284 fifteen meter high columns of the Tuscan order.

St. Peter’s Square in Rome with the Vatican Obelisk

Pope Alexander VII had the approximately 35,300 m² St. Peter’s Square built in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who built the square between 1656 and 1667. The square has an elliptical shape and is framed by 284 colonnades, fifteen meters high, Doric columns. The colonnades are arranged in four rows. 140 statues of saints, each 3.2 meters in size, rise on the parapet. The greatest width of the square is 240 meters, the depth 340 meters

In the middle of the square is the Vatican Obelisk (Obelisk Vaticano). The square was laid out in such a way that the paving of the square descends towards the center. The aim was to be able to overlook the assembled crowd. There are also two fountains on the square. The northern fountain in the piazza is the work of Carlo Maderno (1613), the southern one by Carlo Fontana (1675).

Every Wednesday morning the Pope holds a general audience in St. Peter’s Square.

St. Peter’s Basilica in St. Peter’s Square

St. Peter’s Basilica can also be found in the square. It is the largest church in the world and much more than just the most important building in Christianity. The impressive church building not only has an incredible appearance, but also impresses with the pompous interior. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the most popular in Europe and one of the best sights in Rome is St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City on St. Peter’s Square. The church building impresses every visitor not only with its external appearance but also with the pompous interior. The church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City

The Church is called the Basilica of St. Peter and is the memorial church of the apostle Simon Peter. It is one of the seven pilgrimage churches of Rome. It is the sanctuary of Christianity and every year the destination of many tourists, pilgrims and believers of the Roman Catholic Church. The story of St. Peter’s Basilica begins as early as 64 AD with the crucifixion of Peter, one of Jesus’ apostles. Emperor Constantine the Great had the Old Basilica built between 319 AD and 333 AD on the site of the tomb of St. Peter. Today’s St. Peter’s Basilica was not built until the 16th century. This was done at the behest of Pope Julius II.

Architecture of St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest church in the world and much more than just the most important building in Christendom. Construction began in 1506 and lasted for more than 120 years. Completion is dated November 18, 1626. Today it is the symbol of Rome. The famous architects were Michelangelo, Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Raffael.

Interior fittings

The size of the church indicates: The cathedral houses one main and eight secondary domes, 800 columns, 390 statues made of travertine, marble, stucco and bronze as well as 45 altars. There are also countless treasures inside the classic Renaissance building. These include ornate paintings, sculptures, artifacts, and decorated walls.

interior view

Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica

The Castel Sant’Angelo is one of the most important sights in Rome. The Angel’s Bridge in front of it leads to Castel Sant’Angelo over the Tiber in Rome. It was originally built as a mausoleum and later converted into a fort by various popes.

Castel Sant’Angelo

The Castel Sant’Angelo (Italian: Castel Sant’Angelo or Mausoleo di Adriano) in Rome was originally built as a mausoleum for the Roman emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD) and his successors and later converted into a castle by various popes. From 1901 the building was no longer used as a castle. Castel Sant’Angelo has been a museum since February 13, 1906.

The Castel Sant’Angelo makes a rather dreary impression from the outside. A visit is worthwhile, however, because the interior includes magnificent rooms and beautiful paintings on the walls. In addition, the viewing platform alone is worthwhile.

One of the most popular and well-known fountains in the world and thus one of the greatest attractions in Rome is the Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi). At around 26 meters high and around 50 meters wide, it is also the largest fountain in Rome.

Trevi Fountain – the largest fountain in Rome

The fountain was built from 1732 to 1762 based on a design by Nicola Salvi. It is a late baroque fountain, in transition to the classical style. It was built following the Palazzo Poli. This was preceded by an architecture competition in which many well-known architects of the time participated and which was organized by Pope Clement XII. was awarded. The hitherto relatively unknown Nicola Salvi prevailed.

Architecture of the Trevi Fountain

The baroque Trevi Fountain consists of a palace facade with a triumphal arch in front of it. The full length of the facade of the fountain is based on the Palazzo Poli. In front of the palace facade there are sea figures on a rocky landscape, over which the water pours into a large, shallow basin. In the middle it is about the sea god Oceanus. The fountain is made of travertine from Tivoli and marble from Carrara.

The fountain is at the end of the Aqua Vergine aqueduct. This supplied ancient Rome with water.

It is a tradition to throw a coin into the fountain. According to legend, this is said to bring good luck. Do not miss your luck. The coins are regularly removed by Rome city officials. The money is to be donated to charity. Over the year it should be a sum of up to 1 million euros.

Address

Piazza di Trevi, 00187 Roma RM, Italy

Opening hours

The fountain is not subject to opening times.

Entry

Visiting the fountain does not cost anything.

Spanish Steps in Rome

The slope to the church of Santa Tinità was supposed to replace the Monti and guarantee a dignified access. The Pope personally decreed that a staircase should be built at this point in 1723. In the associated competition, Francesco De Sanctis prevailed with his design. The Spanish Steps were built in the Italian style from 1723.

The name goes back to the Spanish embassy, which was very important to the Holy See and was based here.

The building is 68 meters long, 40 meters wide in the middle terrace and spans 52 meters with the upper two-part staircase. Overall, the staircase overcomes a height difference of 23 meters.

The Roman Forum in Rome is one of the most important sights in Rome and one of the most popular attractions among tourists.
The most famous sight and landmark of Rome and one of the most important landmarks in the world is the Colosseum in Rome. It is the largest of the amphitheaters built in ancient Rome, the largest closed structure in ancient Rome and the largest amphitheater ever built in the world. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.

Colosseum – architecture of the Romans

The amphitheater was built between 72 and 80 AD. It served as the venue for mostly extremely cruel and brutal events that were organized by members of the imperial family to entertain and amuse the free residents of Rome and the Roman Empire with free admission. The gladiator fights were gigantic social events. These often lasted for days and weeks and attracted crowds of people from all parts of the empire to Rome. At the opening alone, around 5000 animals are said to have been killed in animal fights, sea battles and gladiator fights.

Architecture of the Colosseum

The elliptical building has a width of 156 meters, a length of 188 meters, a circumference of 527 meters and a height of 48 meters. It is an architectural masterpiece. The building has a basement and the arena floor could be removed. In this way, the amphitheater could also be flooded if necessary. It is one of the most impressive buildings of the Roman Empire. It was voted one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Colosseum in Rome

50,000 spectators in the Colosseum

According to current calculations, there was space for around 50,000 spectators in the Colosseum. So that everyone could find their place quickly, the Colosseum had 80 entrances around the arena. Four of these entrances were reserved for the top layer. The entrance system used is still a model for many stadiums today.
