The Chain Bridge in Budapest, also known as Széchenyi lánchíd, connects the districts of Buda and Pest and is an iconic landmark of the city. Built between 1839 and 1849, it was the first permanent bridge over the Danube and revolutionized traffic. Its technical masterpiece, the hanging chains and classic pillars, made it a symbol of modern Hungarian infrastructure and is now a popular tourist destination.

Chain Bridge over the Danube

The Chain Bridge in Budapest is a landmark of the city, connecting the districts of Buda and Pest across the Danube. It was built between 1839 and 1849 at the initiative of Hungarian reformer Count István Széchenyi and is the oldest and most famous of the nine road bridges over the river. With a length of 375 meters, it was the largest of its kind in Europe when completed, and remains one of the most important attractions of the Hungarian capital.

The bridge, also known as Széchenyi lánchíd, is a suspension bridge supported by two imposing, classical pillars. Massive iron chains pass through these pillars to support the bridge – hence the name “Chain Bridge.” This structure, weighing about 2,000 tons, was a technical marvel for its time and revolutionized traffic between the two cities. Before the bridge, the connection between Buda and Pest across the river was severely limited in winter, as the pontoon bridge was often destroyed by freezing temperatures.

History and Construction of the Chain Bridge

The idea for the bridge arose after a devastating flood in 1838, which highlighted the need for a permanent Danube crossing. Count Széchenyi, who envisioned a modern Hungarian infrastructure, initiated the founding of the Budapest Bridge Society to finance the construction. Despite initial skepticism from the Viennese government, which favored railway constructions, the construction of the Chain Bridge was pushed forward with private investors. The design was by English engineer William Tierney Clark, with the project managed by Adam Clark.

Work began in 1840, and after years of planning and construction, interrupted by the 1848 revolution, the bridge was officially opened on November 20, 1849. It was the first permanent bridge over the Danube in Budapest and significantly eased trade and traffic. In the following years, the Chain Bridge was expanded and renovated several times to accommodate increasing traffic.

During World War II, the bridge was blown up by the German Wehrmacht in 1945. It was reopened in 1949, just in time for its 100th anniversary, after extensive repairs. In the decades that followed, improvements were made, such as the installation of lighting in 1957 and a new light show in 1999 for the bridge’s 150th anniversary.

The Chain Bridge is not only a technical marvel but also an important national symbol. Many myths and legends surround its creation. A popular story suggests that Count Széchenyi built the bridge to visit his girlfriend in Pest regularly, without having to wade through the water in bad weather. This romantic tale is an expression of the deep cultural significance the bridge holds for Hungarians. It is also seen as a symbol of the dawn of a new era in Hungarian modernization.

Moreover, the Chain Bridge appears in various cultural contexts, such as on stamps and coins, reinforcing its status as a national landmark. After the complete restoration of the bridge in the 20th century, new lighting was installed, making the structure shine in an impressive light at night. The bridge is now not only a functional transport link but also a popular tourist destination and an iconic photo motif.

In addition to the bridge, a tunnel was dug under Castle Hill, planned by Adam Clark, to further improve connections between the districts. Today, the Chain Bridge is used by various modes of transport, and its historical significance is brought to life by its impressive architecture and symbolism.

Chain Bridge at Night

This famous structure in Budapest stands as a symbol of the emergence of national identity. Even at night, like the entire Danube waterfront, it is a sight to behold. Like many other buildings, it is illuminated, giving the Danube bank a special atmosphere. The Széchenyi Lánchíd is thus not only a technical marvel but also a living part of Budapest’s identity and history. It remains one of the city’s most famous landmarks and a central point of urban life.

The Shoes on the Danube Bank in Budapest commemorate the brutal mass executions of Hungarian Jews in 1944/45 by the fascist Arrow Cross Party. The installation of 60 pairs of cast-iron shoes along the Danube symbolizes the victims who were forced to remove their shoes before their execution. This silent memorial serves as a poignant reminder and a warning against forgetting.

Shoes on the Danube Bank – A Memorial of Remembrance

The Holocaust memorial *Shoes on the Danube Bank* (Hungarian *Cipők a Duna-parton*) in Budapest is a striking tribute to the atrocities suffered by Hungarian Jews under the rule of the fascist Arrow Cross Party in 1944/45. Created in 2005 by filmmaker Can Togay and sculptor Gyula Pauer, it is located on the Pest side of the Danube, south of the Parliament building. The approximately 40-meter-long installation of 60 pairs of cast-iron shoes symbolizes the people who were shot along the riverbank, their bodies falling into the Danube.

Background and Symbolism

During the final months of World War II, the Arrow Cross Party seized power in Hungary through a coup. An estimated 10,000 people were brutally murdered, including many Jews who were executed along the Danube. Before being shot, victims were forced to remove their shoes—a valuable commodity during wartime. These shoes, standing or lying as if “randomly left behind,” are now adorned with candles and stones placed by visitors to honor the memory of the victims.

The inscription on the memorial plaques in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew reads: *“To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944/45.”*

The memorial stands out for its simplicity and silence. It compels viewers to confront the unspoken horrors of the past. It not only honors anonymous victims but also commemorates individuals like Gedeon Richter, the founder of modern Hungarian pharmaceutical science, who was murdered at the riverbank on December 30, 1944.

Historical Events and Rescue Efforts

On January 8, 1945, Hungarian diplomat Károly Szabó and 20 policemen prevented the execution of Jewish prisoners. This courageous act saved 154 people, including scientists like Lars Ernster and Jacob Steiner, who later achieved distinguished careers.

The *Shoes on the Danube Bank* is one of Budapest’s most renowned Holocaust memorials. This silent yet powerful monument reminds us of the horrific fates of thousands and emphasizes that such crimes must never be forgotten.

The Pesti Vigadó is one of Budapest’s most important cultural landmarks and a vibrant center of social life. Located right on the banks of the Danube, between the Chain Bridge and the Elisabeth Bridge, it blends history and modern culture. Originally opened in 1865, this Romantic building attracted great composers like Liszt, Wagner, and Brahms. After extensive restoration, it now shines again, offering a diverse program of concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances. An unforgettable experience for culture and architecture enthusiasts!

Pesti Vigadó Ballroom and Concert Hall

The Pesti Vigadó is one of Budapest’s most significant cultural landmarks and a center of social life. Located on the left bank of the Danube, between the Chain Bridge and the Elisabeth Bridge in Pest’s 5th district, it is often referred to as the “Pester Redoute.” The building was constructed between 1860 and 1864 based on the designs of Hungarian architect Frigyes Feszl in the Romantic style. It stands on the site of an earlier neoclassical building designed by Mihály Pollack, which existed from 1829 to 1849.

From the beginning, the Pesti Vigadó played a prominent role in the city’s cultural life. After its opening in 1865, it quickly became the center for all types of social events, including grand balls, concerts, and other gatherings. Famous composers such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Johannes Brahms, Claude Debussy, Zoltán Kodály, and Béla Bartók performed here. The venue was the site of many important premieres, including Liszt’s orchestral version of the Hungarian national anthem.

Despite its cultural significance, the building was severely damaged during World War II, and its reconstruction took many years. The Vigadó finally reopened in 1980 after extensive restoration work. Today, it is once again a vibrant cultural hub, offering concerts, theater performances, exhibitions, children’s programs, and film screenings.

The architecture of the Pesti Vigadó is a true masterpiece of the Romantic era, with its stunning interiors still reflecting its historical grandeur. A guided tour is highly recommended to fully appreciate the history and artistic design of the building. One of the highlights of the Vigadó is its panoramic terrace on the sixth floor, offering breathtaking views of the Buda side of the city, including the iconic Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, and the Citadel. This part of the Danube riverbank is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the view from the Vigadó is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the city.

Over the years, the Pesti Vigadó has become an indispensable cultural center in Budapest. It seamlessly blends history and modern usage and remains a place where both Hungarian and international culture is celebrated. Whether for a classical concert, an art exhibition, or simply to enjoy the stunning views, a visit to the Pesti Vigadó is an unforgettable experience.

Royal Palace

The Royal Palace, also known as Buda Castle, is a historic jewel of Budapest. Built in 1733, it proudly stands above the Castle District on the Buda side of the Danube. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage, the palace offers a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture. The buildings in the Castle District blend Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Once the residence of Hungarian kings, today it houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the National Széchényi Library. Surrounding the palace, you’ll find landmarks like Matthias Church, Vienna Gate, and the Fisherman’s Bastion. Visitors can also explore the cave system beneath the palace. The Royal Palace and the Castle District provide a stunning way to experience Budapest, especially at dusk when the city is beautifully illuminated.

Fisherman’s Bastion

The Fisherman’s Bastion is a neo-Romanesque monument on Buda Hill, offering breathtaking views of the Danube and Pest since 1895. Built between 1895 and 1902 on the site of Buda’s medieval fish market, the bastion was designed by Frigyes Schulek and dedicated to the fishermen’s guild, which defended this section of the city walls in medieval times. Stretching over 140 meters with seven towers representing Hungary’s seven founding tribes, it’s part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The bronze equestrian statue of King Stephen I stands prominently in front. From the bastion, visitors enjoy panoramic views of Pest, including the magnificent Parliament Building.

Matthias Church

Matthias Church, a Roman Catholic church in the Castle District of Budapest, is a prominent city landmark and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Originally built in the mid-13th century by King Béla IV, it was redesigned in a neo-Gothic style by Frigyes Schulek in the late 19th century. Known for its ornate architecture and colorful glazed roof tiles, the church stands on Holy Trinity Square in Buda’s Old Town. Named after King Matthias Corvinus, who expanded it in the 15th century, the church has hosted significant coronation ceremonies, including those of Charles I, Franz Joseph I, and Charles IV. Today, it serves as the cathedral of the Hungarian Military Ordinariate.

Parliament Building

The Parliament Building on the banks of the Danube is one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks and serves as the seat of the Hungarian Parliament. Constructed between 1885 and 1904 in a neo-Gothic style, it spans 268 meters along the river. At 123 meters wide and 96 meters tall, it is the largest parliamentary building in Europe and one of the tallest structures in Budapest. Architect Imre Steindl drew inspiration from the Palace of Westminster in London. The building includes the impressive Dome Hall, which houses the Holy Crown of Hungary, and various chambers and offices for legislative and administrative purposes. The Parliament is especially spectacular during the golden hour or illuminated at night, making it a must-see for visitors.

Pesti Vigadó

The Pesti Vigadó, also known as the Pest Redoute, is a significant concert and ballroom venue on the left bank of the Danube, between the Chain Bridge and Elisabeth Bridge. Built between 1860 and 1864 in a romantic style by Frigyes Feszl, it underwent extensive renovations from 2004 to 2014. The Pesti Vigadó serves as a key cultural attraction and event venue in Budapest.

Heroes’ Square

Heroes’ Square, featuring the imposing Millennium Monument, is a landmark attraction in the Pest district and part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The 36-meter-high column is the centerpiece, commemorating Hungarian history’s key figures. Flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle, the square is one of Budapest’s most monumental spaces.

Heroes’ Square in Budapest (Photo by charlemagne via Pixabay)

Liberty Statue

The Liberty Statue atop Gellért Hill is one of Budapest’s most prominent landmarks. Erected in 1947 to honor soldiers who liberated Hungary during World War II, the statue depicts a female figure holding a palm branch aloft. It stands 14 meters tall atop a 40-meter base, commanding views from nearly anywhere in the city.

St. Stephen’s Basilica

St. Stephen’s Basilica, the largest church in Budapest, was completed in 1905 and dedicated to Hungary’s first king. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1987, its Neoclassical and Neo-Renaissance styles create an architectural masterpiece. Visitors can ascend the dome for panoramic views of Budapest.

Budapest Attractions: Bridges in Budapest

Chain Bridge

The Chain Bridge, built from 1839 to 1849, is an important connection between the districts of Buda and Pest over the Danube and is considered one of Budapest’s most significant landmarks. It is crossed by almost every visitor and is the oldest and most famous of the nine Budapest bridges over the river.
This suspension bridge stretches over a length of 375 meters and is supported by two arch-like pillars, through which the iron chains of the bridge body pass, giving it its name. Weighing 2000 tons, it is a remarkable engineering achievement. The bridge, also known as Széchenyi lánchíd (Széchenyi Chain Bridge), was built on the initiative of the Hungarian reformer Count István Széchenyi and symbolizes the beginning of national identity.

The Chain Bridge also shines brightly at night, giving the Danube waterfront a special charm with its lighting. Therefore, it is an unforgettable experience to visit and walk across it, especially during a nighttime city tour. A visit to this landmark is undoubtedly one of the must-do activities during a trip to Budapest.

Budapest Attractions: Baths in Budapest

Budapest’s baths have a long history dating back to Roman times. The Ottomans introduced a new bathing culture to the city, which continues to this day. In the 18th century, systematic analysis of the healing springs began, and in 1930 Budapest was granted the title of “Bath City” due to its many healing springs.
The main healing and public baths are the Gellért Bath, Széchenyi Bath, Rudas Bath, and Lukács Bath. Some of these baths have developed unique subcultures, such as the hours-long chess playing in the warm waters of Széchenyi Bath or the gathering of actors and artists in Lukács Bath.

In addition to the healing baths, there are many swimming pools in Budapest, including the Császár Bath and the Sports Swimming Pool on Margaret Island. In 2008, one of Europe’s largest indoor water theme parks, the Ramada Resort, opened.

Food and Drink in Budapest: Hungarian Cuisine

Budapest offers a variety of dining options, from traditional Hungarian cuisine to international influences. Typical Hungarian dishes are hearty with plenty of meat, garlic, and paprika, while desserts are often sweet. In addition to traditional Hungarian food, there are many international restaurants offering various cuisines. Recommended restaurants for typical Hungarian dishes include Dubarry and Drum Cafe. There are also many hidden gems for different culinary experiences, including Pizzica for Italian pizza, Toltö for sausages, and Buja for giant schnitzels. In addition to restaurants, there are many bakeries with delicious Hungarian pastries, and coffeehouses like New York Café and Gerbeaud Café offer a wide selection of cakes and pastries. Hungarian drinks like wine, fruit and herb schnapps, beer, and Hungarian Melange are also popular. Budapest also boasts a lively bar scene, including ruin bars like Szimpla Kert and bars like 0,75 Bar and Fröccsterasz for relaxed evenings.

History of Budapest

The history of Budapest dates back to Roman times when the area was founded around 89 AD as a military camp. Later, the Roman settlement of Aquincum became the capital of the province of Pannonia Inferior. After the fall of Roman rule, Slavic populations settled in the region, but were displaced by the incoming Hungarians in 896.
In the Middle Ages, Budapest gained importance under King Stephen I and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. The city was, however, repeatedly ravaged by invasions and destructions, including the Mongol invasion in the 13th century and the Turkish occupation in the 16th century.

During the Habsburg period and the subsequent revolutions and uprisings in the 19th century, Budapest underwent a period of growth and modernization, partly due to the development of bridges over the Danube.

In the 20th century, Budapest played an important role in the world wars and witnessed significant political upheavals, including the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Since the change of regime in 1989 and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, Budapest has experienced a period of democratic renewal and economic development, including Hungary’s accession to the European Union in 2004.

Coat of Arms of Budapest

The coat of arms of Budapest, which was created in 1873 when the city was merged from the coats of arms of Buda and Pest, shows a red shield divided by a silver wavy band representing the Danube. In the upper field is a golden castle for the Pest district, and in the lower field is a golden castle for the Buda district. The shield is held by a golden lion and a golden griffin, on which the Stephen’s crown rests.
The flag of Budapest was also introduced in 1873 and was originally based on the red-yellow-blue flag of Pest. In 2011, however, a new flag was introduced, showing the coat of arms of Budapest on a white background, with red and green triangles at the top and bottom.

Other Budapest Attractions

Shoes on the Danube Bank

The “Shoes on the Danube Bank” memorial commemorates the pogroms of Jews by the Arrow Cross during World War II. It consists of 60 pairs of metal shoes and symbolizes the mass shootings of Hungarian Jews. The memorial, created by Gyula Pauer and Can Togay, is located on the eastern bank of the Danube in Budapest and stretches over 40 meters. It serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, honoring the atrocities of the Holocaust and its victims, so they are never forgotten.

Budapest Attractions: Experience Activities

Boat Tour on the Danube

A boat tour on the Danube is an essential experience during a visit to Budapest and is one of the top attractions of the city. Both during the day and at night, the water provides a unique view of the city, offering an unparalleled experience.
The Danube, with a total length of 2,857 kilometers, runs through the Hungarian capital, separating the districts of Buda and Pest. Nine bridges connect these districts, with the Chain Bridge being the most famous. As one of Europe’s largest and longest rivers, the Danube is also one of the oldest and most important trade routes on the continent, connecting various cultures.

Along the Danube, many of Budapest’s main attractions are located, including the Royal Palace, the Shoes on the Danube Bank, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and illuminated landmarks that create a special atmosphere in the evenings. It is therefore especially recommended to visit the Danube banks in the evening, whether on foot, by bus, or during a boat tour.

There are numerous providers of boat tours and river cruises on the Danube offering various options, such as dinner, candlelight, or simply sightseeing tours. Most tours depart from Margaret Bridge, so it’s advisable to book in advance and reserve seats.

The 268-meter-long Parliament building in Budapest is an impressive landmark on the banks of the Danube. Built in the neo-Gothic style and inspired by the London Westminster Palace, it is Europe’s largest parliamentary building. It houses nearly 700 rooms, including the dome hall, and is a significant symbol of Hungarian politics. Visit and enjoy the stunning architecture, especially at sunset.

Parliament Building on the Danube Bank

It is the largest parliament building in Europe, located in Budapest. Inspired by the Palace of Westminster in London, the building was constructed in the neo-Gothic style from 1885 to 1904. The architect was Imre Steindl. With a length of 268 meters and a width of 123 meters, it is the largest parliament building in Europe. Along with the St. Stephen’s Basilica, it is also one of the tallest buildings in Budapest, standing at 96 meters. Today, it remains the seat of the Hungarian Parliament.

The building is a real eye-catcher in different lighting conditions and is especially striking during a boat tour.

Parliament Building: Interior and Functions

The building consists of three main areas: the central dome hall, and the northern and southern chambers and rooms.

The dome hall, centrally located, is especially impressive. It houses the Holy Crown of St. Stephen along with the royal insignia.
Buda Castle Budapest: Historical Castle on the Castle Hill

The buildings of the Castle District are predominantly constructed in the Baroque style. The current castle combines Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements. The origins of the palace date back to the early 13th century. King Béla IV commissioned the castle around 1241. The palace is the highest building in the area. Since then, it has served as the residence of Hungarian kings, with each ruler leaving their mark, buildings, and facilities. From Buda Castle, you have a fantastic view over Pest. Inside, you can visit the royal apartments of the main building and the Hall of Honor. You will also find the Hungarian National Gallery, the Historical Museum of Budapest, and the National Library within the castle.

Matthias Church in Budapest – UNESCO World Heritage

The church was built by King Béla IV in the mid-13th century. She had a Romanesque basilica built. After the Mongol invasion, Béla IV had castles built in strategically important places to protect the population in the future. The most important of these was the Buda Castle. In this context, the Matthias Church was built as a church for the German citizens of Buda. The basic form of today’s church goes back to this basilica.

The church has been rebuilt and expanded several times throughout history. It got its current neo-Gothic appearance from the reconstruction by Frigyes Schulek in 1873-1896. The church is named after King Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490). He had the church expanded in 1470 with a five-storey tower and the royal oratory.

Matthias Church – Coronation Church

The Matthias Church is also called the Coronation Church, since important coronations took place here. Among others, the coronations of Charles I Robert of Anjou (1309), Franz Joseph I (1867) and Charles IV (1916). The church now serves as the Cathedral of the Hungarian Military Ordinariat.

St. Stephen’s Basilica

The largest church in the Hungarian capital was dedicated to the first Hungarian king, whose mummified right hand is considered one of the country’s most sacred treasures. It is also co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. Since 1987 it has been registered as part of the Danube panorama in the UNESCO World Heritage.

In 1851 the construction of the basilica began according to the plans of József Hild in the classical style, but he died a few years later. After the dome collapsed due to faulty foundations in 1868, the construction management was handed over to Miklós Ybl. He continued to build the church in the neo-renaissance style. This also died a few years later, which led to another change. József Kauser completed the construction.

The church building is approximately 92 m long and 62 m wide and can accommodate up to 8500 people inside.

One of the most important sights in Budapest is the Fisherman’s Bastion on Castle Hill in Buda. The neo-Romanesque monument was built from 1895 to 1902 and is used as a viewing terrace on the Danube and Pest.

Fisherman’s Bastion with the seven towers

The Fishermen’s Bastion was built on the site of Buda’s medieval fish market from 1895 to 1902. This neo-Romanesque monument was erected by Frigyes Schulek and belongs to the fishing guild – the guild of Danube fishermen. This guild had to defend this section of the city wall in the Middle Ages.

Fisherman’s Bastion in Budapest

The neo-Romanesque complex itself is used as a viewing terrace on the Danube and Pest. The bastion is 140 m long and consists of a total of seven towers. These represent the seven original Hungarian tribes that were united by Prince Arpad, the founder of the Hungarian nation. The conical towers are reminiscent of the tents of the Magyars. With its numerous stairs, towers and battlements and the remains of the old city wall, it is also reminiscent of a medieval castle. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Castle District.

Statue of Liberty in Budapest

The statue was created in 1947 and is 14 meters high. Together with the base, it is about 40 meters high. This makes it the largest of a group of three bronze statues by the sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl. All three statues were created in honor of the soldiers who liberated the country in World War II. A Hungarian nurse was the model.
