Parliament Building on the Danube Bank

It is the largest parliament building in Europe, located in Budapest. Inspired by the Palace of Westminster in London, the building was constructed in the neo-Gothic style from 1885 to 1904. The architect was Imre Steindl. With a length of 268 meters and a width of 123 meters, it is the largest parliament building in Europe. Along with the St. Stephen’s Basilica, it is also one of the tallest buildings in Budapest, standing at 96 meters. Today, it remains the seat of the Hungarian Parliament.

Parliament Building: Interior and Functions

The building consists of three main areas: the central dome hall, and the northern and southern chambers and rooms.

The dome hall, centrally located, is especially impressive. It houses the Holy Crown of St. Stephen along with the royal insignia. The northern and southern chambers are used for representative purposes, and there are nearly 700 additional rooms. These include the offices of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and the National Assembly.
