The Panthéon in Paris, majestically located on the hill of Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement, is much more than just an architectural masterpiece. It embodies the rich history and culture of France, from its original role as a church to becoming a national mausoleum where significant figures are honored. Today, it is one of the key landmarks of Paris and a symbol of the city. With a fascinating architecture skillfully combining ancient and Gothic elements, and an impressive list of personalities including Voltaire, Marie Curie, and Victor Hugo, the Panthéon is a living testament to France’s influential past and present. In this article, we will delve into the history and significance of this iconic Parisian landmark.

Panthéon in Paris

The Panthéon in Paris is an impressive national memorial and one of the city’s most significant architectural landmarks. It is situated on the hill of Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement and has a rich history closely linked to French culture, history, and science.

Originally planned as a church for the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève, King Louis XV commissioned architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot for its construction, which took place between 1764 and 1790. The Panthéon impresses with its neoclassical architecture on the exterior, while the interior features Gothic elements such as slender columns and ribbed vaults. This contrast between the ancient exterior and Gothic interior design makes the building unique.

During the French Revolution, the Panthéon was declared a national mausoleum by the revolutionaries, dedicated to significant personalities of French history. Monumental monuments and tombs inside the building honor figures like Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, and many others who made outstanding contributions to French culture and society.

Notably, the Panthéon has also included women honored for their own achievements. These include Geneviève de Gaulle-Anthonioz, Germaine Tillion, Simone Veil, and Josephine Baker. Recognizing women in such a prominent national memorial is a significant step towards equality.

In addition to its historical importance, the Panthéon also played a role in the history of science. It was here that physicist Léon Foucault achieved the empirical demonstration of the Earth’s rotation in 1851 with his famous Foucault pendulum.

Thus, the Panthéon is not only an architectural gem but also a place that encapsulates the history, culture, and science of France. It is a site of remembrance and recognition for those who shaped the country and an inspiration for visitors from around the world.

Located on the southern bank of the Seine River in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay is one of the outstanding attractions of the city. The impressive building, once the Gare d’Orsay, was constructed in 1900 by Victor Laloux for the World Exhibition. Originally designed as a railway station, it served as a long-distance transportation hub to the southwest of France until 1939.

Musée d’Orsay – Art Museum in Paris

The Musée d’Orsay is situated in the former railway station hall of Gare d’Orsay, built in 1900 for the Paris World Exhibition. It showcases over 4,000 works, including sculptures, paintings, and drawings from the years 1848 to 1914, associated with Impressionism, Expressionism, and Pointillism. The museum, located in the old Orsay station, opened in 1986 and is one of the most visited places in Paris, with nearly three million visitors annually.

The station, originally constructed for the 1900 World Exhibition, was later used for various purposes, including as a reception center for prisoners of war after 1945 and as a film set. After various considerations for the future of the decommissioned station, the idea of a museum became more concrete. The transformation began in 1986 under the direction of architect Gae Aulenti, who preserved the industrial architecture while adapting it to modern techniques.

The Musée d’Orsay, officially inaugurated by President François Mitterrand, now houses an impressive collection of impressionist art. Originally built as a modern station of the Belle Époque, the building reflects the innovations of the industrial age and impresses with its massive metal framework and delicate decorative elements of glass. The Gare d’Orsay, once a sensation at the 1900 World Exhibition, has transformed from a transportation hub into a significant cultural center.

Architecture

The Gare d’Orsay, originally built for the 1900 World Exhibition, connected Paris and Orléans. Due to the growing need for longer trains, the station was closed in 1939 and classified as a historical monument in 1978. Under the direction of architect Gae Aulenti, a careful transformation into the Musée d’Orsay took place from 1980 to 1986, exposing the main hall, adding covered terrace museum halls, and restoring old ornaments.

While the former function as a station is not reflected in the architecture, the eclectic style does. The Gare d’Orsay showcased the completion of Art Nouveau at the 12th World Exhibition and now houses collections of artistic works from the period of 1848 to 1914, including works by artists such as Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec.

The Musée d’Orsay brings together not only art but also architecture and technology. The architecture team ACT created a unique symbiosis of the original building and museum design from 1979 to 1986. The main hall became the museum route, terraces turned into exhibition spaces, and the former restaurant became the museum restaurant with a unique view of the building’s levels.

Collections and Exhibitions

The Musée d’Orsay houses a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, crafts, designs, graphics, photographs, building components, and furniture. The focus is on the period from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, especially in Impressionism. Renowned artists such as Monet, Renoir, Manet, and Degas are represented. The collection spans from around 1848 to 1914, including a globally unique collection of French Impressionists. The museum also presents outstanding artworks of all styles from this era.

The Moulin Rouge in the Montmartre district of Paris is one of the outstanding attractions of the city. The cabaret located at Place Blanche in the entertainment district of Pigalle is famous for its iconic Red Mill, impressive shows, and an extensive wine and champagne cellar.

Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge was founded in 1889 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler, who owned the L’Olympia cabaret. It opened on October 6 of the same year, alongside the Eiffel Tower. The name comes from the red mill on the roof, which harks back to the highest point in Paris, Montmartre. Originally used for balls, the Moulin Rouge featured famous Parisian stars, including La Goulue, Yvette Guilbert, and Jane Avril.

Over the years, the Moulin Rouge evolved into a venue for operettas, revues, and even as a cinema. Since 1955, “dinner spectacles” have been offered. In the 1990s, the Moulin Rouge experienced a financial crisis but regained success from 2000 onwards, partly thanks to the well-known 2001 film “Moulin Rouge.”

The cabaret now presents the fascinating revue “Féerie,” a show of superlatives featuring the French Cancan, feathers, rhinestones, and sequins. Various artists, including the famous Doriss Girls wearing more than 1,000 different costumes, perform during the shows.

The Moulin Rouge is not only known for its shows but also for its extensive wine and champagne cellar. It is considered the largest single consumer of champagne worldwide. The name and style of the Moulin Rouge have been copied by many cabarets and nightclubs worldwide.

The most famous song about the Moulin Rouge is “Lady Marmalade.” Over the years, the cabaret has had a fascinating history and remains one of the most famous landmarks in Paris, shaping the Belle Époque era.

Obelisk of Luxor

The Egyptian granite obelisk weighs around 230 tons. It is a gift from the Egyptian viceroy Muhammad Ali to the French king Louis Philippe. The transfer from Egypt to Paris is said to have taken over 2 years.

The obelisk represents part of the monuments on the so-called “Ax Historique”. This historical axis of Paris runs between the Louvre and the Grande Arche.

At the end of the Champs-Elysées on the Place Charles de Gaulle is the Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile, a landmark of the metropolis of Paris. In addition to the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, the Triumphal Arch is one of the most important sights in Paris. Here you will find information for your visit. You can reach the Arc de Triomphe via a pedestrian underpass from the Champs-Elysées to the “Arc de Triomphe”.

Arc de Triomphe by Napoleon

It was Napoleon who, after the victory of his armies in the Battle of Austerlitz, had the triumphal arch built in honor of the Grand Armée at the end of the Champs-Elysées in 1806. The foundation stone for this symbolic monument was laid on August 15, 1806 under the direction of the architect Jean-François Chalgrin. However, the construction work has meanwhile been stopped due to the abdication of Napoleon. It was not completed until 1836 under King Louis-Philippe.

The triumphal arch is today 49.54 m high, 44.82 m wide and has a depth of 22 m.

Reliefs on the triumphal arch

Reliefs by the sculptors Antoine Étex, Jean-Pierre Cortot and François Rude

The triumphal arch is also famous for its reliefs. Among other things, you will find the relief “Marseillaise” by François Rude (1784-1855) on the east facade. On the west side you will find, among other things, the relief by Antoine Etex “Triumph Napoleon after the peace of 1810”. On the inside of the triumphal arch you will also find the names of the great battles of the Empire and the Revolution, as well as the names of the personalities of that time. The names of the people who fell in battle are underlined.

Under the arch is the tomb of the unknown soldier from the First World War. They are remembered by an Eternal Flame, which is maintained daily, in French called Flamme du Souvenir (German: Flamme of Remembrance).

Arc de Triomphe | View over Paris from the observation deck

The view from the Triumphal Arch is definitely a highlight. All you have to do is climb 284 steps via a steep spiral staircase. As a reward, you will receive a unique panoramic view over the Champs-Élysées from the terrace on the roof of the triumphal arch. See the great sights such as the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysées, the most magnificent street in the world, Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur and many more.

Interesting: From the Place Charles de Gaulle, where the Arc de Triomphe is located, 12 avenues go in a star shape in all directions.

A true masterpiece of the Gothic and one of the most visited attractions in the city of Paris is the Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. With its characteristic silhouette, it is located in the historic center of Paris on the eastern tip of the Seine island Île de la Cité. Here you can find information about the attraction.

Notre-Dame de Paris Roman Catholic Church – Gothic churches

The Notre-Dame de Paris (“Our Lady of Paris”) cathedral is one of the earliest Gothic churches in France and is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris. Construction began in the middle ages of the 13th century, but was not completed until the 15th century. It was built in four construction phases from 1163 to 1345. It took over 200 years to build. In 1163, under Bishop Maurice de Sully and Louis VII, the construction of the choir and its two galleries began and was finally consecrated in 1182.

The middle third of the nave was created in the second construction phase by 1190. However, there was no closure to the west. It was not until the third construction phase from 1190 to 1225 that the lower floors of the west facade and the front third of the nave were built. The tower floors followed in the fourth construction phase from 1225 to 1250. Then modernizations and extensions took place until the middle of the 14th century.

Architects include Pierre de Montreuil, Jean Baptiste Antoine Lassus, Jean de Chelles, Jean Ravy Raymond du Temple, Pierre de Chelles and Jean le Bouteiller.

Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral

Notre Dame architecture

The two natural stone towers are 69 meters high and can also be visited. The climb is worth it, as you get a fantastic view of Paris from there. The interior of the nave is 130 meters long, 48 meters wide and 35 meters high. Its main axis is roughly parallel to the near left bank of the right arm of the Seine.
The church has a capacity of up to 10,000 people.

Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral

The building is also known for the grotesques (also called drolleries), the gargoyles. The mythical creatures can be found in the “Galerie des Chimères”. In addition, visitors admire the colorful church windows and rose windows, the towers and the steeple.

The cathedral naturally has a carillon. It had 20 bells until the French Revolution. Ten bells still hang in the towers today. Among other things, the 13,000 kg “Emmanuelle” bell in the south tower.

Throughout history – during the French Revolution – Notre-Dame was also badly damaged and subsequently rebuilt and restored. Unfortunately, the last damage was not long ago. The cathedral suffered severe damage in a major fire in April 2019. It should be reconstructed true to the original. Until then, Notre-Dame is not accessible to visitors.

Facts: Napoléon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in Notre Dame in 1804. The cathedral is also known from Victor Hugo’s historical novel “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame”, published in 1831.

In the Montmartre district in Paris you will find the Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre Basilica. The gleaming white church can be seen from afar and is one of the most important landmarks and most visited sights in Paris. Here you can find information about the attraction.

Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre in Paris

The Basilique du Sacre Coeur, in in English “Sacred Heart Basilica”, is located in the Montmartre district of Paris – and on the 130 meter high Montmartre hill. The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church was built in the neo-Byzantine style between 1875 and 1914. In 1919, after the First World War, the church was consecrated. It is consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The construction of the historic church was started in 1875 by the French builder, restorer and architect Paul Abadie, but was not completed until 1914. He was inspired by Roman-Byzantine churches, such as the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice and the Cathedral of Périgueux. Architecturally, the church is not a basilica, but a cross-domed church.

Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

The church is 83 meters high. The large dome alone is 55 meters high. The foundations should reach 33 meters into the ground so that the church does not sink due to the soil conditions. The three-arched main portal is flanked by equestrian statues. They form the national saints Jeanne d’Arc and Louis IX. from.

The largest mosaic in France can be found inside the building. It decorates the ceiling with over 480 m².

Thanks to her brilliant white face, she is easily recognizable from a distance. The architectural style – due to the white color and the ornamental structure – is also called a “confectioner’s style”. The color comes from the Château Landon stones used. These frost-resistant travertine stones release calcite, i.e. calcite, depending on the weather, which leads to a chalk-like, bright white color of the building.

Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

View from the dome over all of Paris

From the 55 meter high dome you have a fantastic view and a great 360 ° panorama of Paris. In good weather you can see up to 40 km.

You can reach the Sacré-Cœur via the stairs that lead through the park in front of it. The stairs are very popular with tourists. Alternatively, you can also take a funicular to get to the basilica (Funiculaire de Montmartre).

The picturesque surrounding Montmartre district invites you to linger with its many cafes, street artists and small shops. Take your time to explore the area.

With more than 380,000 objects, the Louvre Art Museum in Paris is one of the most important museums in the world and one of the most important sights in Paris. Almost 10 million visitors visit the museum every year. This makes the Musée du Louvre the largest and most visited art museum in the world and, alongside the Eiffel Tower, one of the most important landmarks in Paris.

Louvre | Art museum in the historic Louvre Palace

The Louvre Museum in Paris is housed in the historic Louvre Palace. It is the former residence of the French kings and is located on the right bank of the Seine. The museum is entered through the Louvre pyramid.

The museum has been open to visitors since July 27, 1793. The glass pyramid, which is the main entrance, was only built between 1985-89.

On an incredible 72,735 square meters there are more than 380,000 objects of different art styles. However, only 35,000 exhibits – from antiquity to modern times – can be viewed. The collection includes, for example, the Greek and Roman collections of antiquities, paintings by Italian painters from the Renaissance, Flemish paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, and works by French painters from the 15th to 19th centuries.

Works in the Louvre

Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting from the heyday of the Italian Renaissance also hangs in the museum – the Mona Lisa. Compared to many other great works in the museum, this painting is very small. But just follow the crowd to find it.

For all Egypt fans: The Sphinx with the name of King Amenemes II is also in the collection. One of the most important ancient Greek antiquities is the statue of Aphrodite, known as Venus de Milo. The marble statue was created around 120 BC. In addition to the Mona Lisa, there are also countless masterpieces by important artists, including by Eugène Delacroix, Jacques-Louis David, Francois Clouet, Michelangelo and many others.

In addition to the Musée du Louvre, there are also many other museums in Paris. The French capital has 200 museums.

The 324 meter high Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most visited landmarks in the world and one of the best sights in Paris. The iron lattice tower was built as a monumental entrance portal and observation tower for the World Exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Eiffel Tower | Lattice iron tower for the world exhibition

The Eiffel Tower is named after its builder Gustave Eiffel and was built from 1887 to 1889. The first groundbreaking took place on January 26, 1887. Today it is one of the most famous icons of architecture and engineering. Until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930, the tower was the tallest building in the world. Originally, the tower was only supposed to advertise French engineering for about twenty years and then be demolished again. But this did not happen. Today the Paris Eiffel Tower is still the tallest structure in Paris.

Eiffel Tower | More than just a lookout tower

The Eiffel Tower, originally only built as a lookout tower, has also been used for other purposes throughout history. Because the 7,300 tons of steel were useful as relays for telegraphy and radio communication at the beginning of telecommunications. In 1921, the first public radio broadcast in France was broadcast. During the Second World War, the tower also acquired military importance. That is why the French considered a partial demolition. However, this demolition did not take place either.

In the course of history the tower had several tasks: as a telecommunications tower, as a radio transmitter, as a restaurant and as a lookout tower.

Eiffel Tower | Today the most important sight of the city

Today you can climb the Eiffel Tower and enjoy a fantastic view. The tower offers three viewing platforms: 1st floor 57m, 2nd floor 115m, 3rd floor 276m. Several elevators or a flight of stairs (steps to the top: 1,665) take you up to the top.

On the first level there is the self-service restaurant “58 Tour Eiffel”. The free interior even has a glass floor.

The star restaurant “Jules Verne” can be reached on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower.

You can only reach the third and last floor in the top of the tower by elevators. In addition to the champagne bar, you will also find Gustave Eiffel’s replicated office there. But the highlight is the panoramic view over Paris. See landmarks like Sacre-Coeur, Notre-Dame, and the Seine from above, among others. The symbol of France is an absolute tourist magnet. 7 million visitors a year speak for themselves. It is therefore essential to book tickets in advance so that you don’t have to queue for too long.
